It’s time for the Der Klassiker!

Sorry if you’re one of the traditional types who hates that name, but it’s becoming more and more appropriate as the years pass.

Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are generally recognized as the two biggest clubs in Germany, and this is the biggest game in the league by far. When these two teams clash, football as a whole takes notice.

📝 Match context

Bayern is cutting it close with RB Leipzig in the race for the title and cannot afford to drop points in the campaign anymore. However, Dortmund has been a real trouble-causing side for the Bavarians in some major competitions. Their previous encounter was at home, and they defeated FC Koln with a 5-1 score on the board.

Dortmund slid down to the fifth spot on the table this term as it stands. The away team is unbeaten in their last three matches in the campaign, following a 3-0 win at home against the likes of Bielefeld. They are 13 points behind the home team on the table and will try to build on their last two wins in the campaign.

🗞 Team news

Bayern Munich (4-2-3-1): Neuer; Sule, Boateng, Alaba, Davies; Goretzka, Kimmich; Gnabry, Muller, Coman; Lewandowski

BvB (4-3-3): Hitz; Morey, Can, Hummels, Guerreiro; Bellingham, Delaney, Dahoud; Reus, Haaland, Sancho

Players to watch:

Bayern Munich: Saturday’s Klassiker will put two of Europe’s most dangerous strikers right now together, with Bayern’s representative being Robert Lewandowski.

The Polish striker is having another unbelievable year, scoring 28 goals in 22 Bundesliga games so far at an average of 1.35 per 90 minutes, just 12 off tying Gerd Muller’s all-time record for most goals in a single season in Germany’s top flight, and six being his tally from 2019/20. Everyone knows Lewandowski made a name for himself at Dortmund, but that hasn’t stopped him from destroying his former club, scoring 19 goals against the Schwarzgelben in all competitions, his joint-best record vs any club.

Borussia Dortmund: In the Dortmund corner, Erling Haaland is continuing on his journey as the heir to Lewandowski’s throne.

The Norwegian is second only to Lewandowski in the Bundesliga’s top scorer rankings, netting 17 times in 18 matches with an average of 0.99 per 90 minutes. Haaland goes into this game having scored five goals in his past six Bundesliga appearances, but he has also added three assists in the games he failed to find the net. Although Haaland is yet to win against Bayern in three attempts, he has scored twice, including in both games so far this season.

🔑 Key OPTA stats

  • Robert Lewandowski has scored 19 goals in 22 competitive meetings with Borussia Dortmund, with five braces and a hat-trick among that haul.
  • Thomas Müller has registered 14 goals in 21 Bundesliga games against Dortmund. He’s Bayern’s next-best contributor after Lewandowski this season with 10 goals and a league-high 11 assists.
  • Bayern Munich are the league’s 67-goal top scorers. It’s over a year since they failed to fire in the Bundesliga (0-0 against RB Leipzig on 9 February 2020).
  • Erling Haaland has scored 30 times across his first 33 Bundesliga appearances. Lewandowski needed 67 matches to reach the same number of German top-flight goals.
  • Jadon Sancho has six goals and nine assists to his name this season. He’s had a direct hand in 12 of Dortmund’s 22 league goals since the turn of the year – among the highest in the league.

🧠 Best bet: Over 3.5 match goals
