You wouldn’t choose to drop it; you would be forced to. The bill bans duplicate coverage.

A complicating factor when talking about M4A is that the average person has no idea what’s in it–most people I talk to think it’s basically Medicare, which is understandable based on the name, and a lot of people think it’s a public option. The thing is, support for it fluctuates wildly when you start telling people about what is in the bill and based on what the potential implications of it (which are not all currently known) might be.

One big issue as far as public support goes is that while people not being able to afford healthcare is a huge problem, most people who have insurance are happy with it. And 55% of people wrongly believe that under M4A, they would be able to keep their employer-backed insurance if they want to. If you tell people that M4A bans duplicate coverage or would get rid of and absorb actual Medicare, it tanks in popularity. Taking this into account, it’s probably not even the most popular way to get universal healthcare–things like public options, expanding eligibility for Medicare and Medicaid, and allowing people to buy into Medicare, are quite probably more popular.

It’s really hard to nail down how much support there would be for it once people start to hear more about it.
