Real Madrid advanced to the last eight of the Champions League after beating Atalanta 3-1(4-1 on aggregate) in a match staged at Santiago Bernabeu.

Real Madrid took the lead in the 34th minute through Karim Benzema and it was a perfect gift from Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Sportiello. The goalkeeper drilled his clearance straight at Modric, who latched on to his own block and cut a pass back for Benzema to score from close range.

Vinicius Junior won possession from Malinovskiy and surged at the Atalanta defence. Toloi stuck out a boot and brought the forward in the box and the referee pointed for the spot. Captain Sergio Ramos stepped up to take it, the goalkeeper guessed right but could not keep the ball out.

In the 83rd minute, Atalanta reduced the deficit from a free-kick. The visitors were awarded a free-kick outside the box, Muriel stepped up and his shot kissed the back of the net leaving Thibaut Courtois beaten from the far post.

A minute later, Marco Asensio, who had come on as a substitute restored Madrid’s lead with a cool finish and it was game over for Atalanta.
